Toddler Development Instrument

Expanding BCs Platform for Early Childhood Monitoring –
A Pilot Research Project for the Toddler Development Instrument (TDI)

In collaboration with parents and caregivers, early child development professionals, policy makers, and researchers, the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has developed a new questionnaire to be used as an early monitoring instrument collecting representative data on the daily lives of 18-month-old toddlers and their families. This questionnaire, the Toddler Development Instrument (TDI), collects information about experiences and contextual factors that are important for the healthy development of toddlers. Questions ask about the toddler’s activities, caregiver-child interactions, sleep and nutrition habits, health, social support, and parental/caregiver access to community resources. This information will be used to help
parents/caregivers learn more about their toddler’s development and to aid communities and caregivers in addressing the needs of toddlers and their families.

The TDI Questionnaire

Thank you for your interest in participating in the pilot implementation of the Toddler Development Instrument (TDI), a questionnaire designed to be completed by primary caregivers of children age 16-20 months.

The purpose of the TDI is to better understand the early life experiences of toddlers and elicit further systems of support for families and communities as they seek to promote the health and wellbeing of children. The ultimate goal is to enhance equity in child development by strengthening family and community resources.

In its final stage, the TDI will serve as a tool by which individual caregivers may enhance their connection with the health system and receive tailored support in their child’s development. By participating in the pilot implementation of the TDI, your responses and feedback will help develop, build, and shape this interface.

Please note that your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. All information collected through this questionnaire will be kept strictly confidential, and no person will have access to your responses outside of the HELP research team. Thank you for your willingness to partner with us in this important work.

Families with children aged 16-20 months of age – To thank you for your time and participation, parents/caregivers will be provided with a $10 gift card upon completion of the TDI questionnaire and feedback form.
